The West Bengal BJP government has replaced the longtime security officers of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a move that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has termed as 'political vendetta'. The former Chief Minister reportedly declined to accept the new security personnel assigned to her.
Security Change Sparks Controversy
On June 17, 2026, Mamata Banerjee's Personal Security Officers (PSOs), who had served her for 20 years, were moved out from her residence in Kolkata. TMC leader Derek O'Brien posted a video on social media, claiming that Banerjee was inside her residence and that he had parked his car to block the entrance. He alleged that she was left without security.
TMC Leaders Condemn Move
The All India Trinamool Congress official handle described the action as a 'calculated move to isolate and endanger her'. TMC MP Mahua Moitra criticized the BJP government, comparing Banerjee's security downgrade to the extensive security provided to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, which includes hundreds of commando cars.
Political Reactions
The TMC has accused the BJP of engaging in vendetta politics. The party questioned the motives behind removing Banerjee's long-serving security personnel, calling it an administrative action that is actually intended to humiliate and put her at risk. The former Chief Minister, a three-term Chief Minister and seven-term Member of Parliament, is being targeted by the shameless vengeful BJP government, according to Moitra.
The incident has escalated tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition TMC in West Bengal, with both sides exchanging barbs over the security arrangements of the former Chief Minister.
