Lucknow: Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, chairman of the Islamic Centre of India and Imam of Lucknow’s Eidgah, has issued a strong appeal to Muslims regarding the upcoming Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) celebrations. He emphasized that only legally permitted animals should be sacrificed, and any violation of the law would attract legal consequences.
Advisory on Permitted Animals
In an advisory released by the Islamic Centre of India, the cleric explicitly stated that the sacrifice of cows is strictly prohibited. He urged the community to perform qurbani within the legal framework and to prioritize communal harmony. The permitted animals for sacrifice include goats, sheep, buffaloes, and camels. No other animal should be used in contravention of legal restrictions.
Schedule and Guidelines
The Bakrid sacrifices will be observed over three days: May 28, 29, and 30. Maulana Khalid Rasheed appealed to people to avoid performing sacrifices on roadsides, streets, or public places. He stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene at all slaughter sites. Animal waste must be disposed of only at designated municipal dumping points.
Prohibition on Public Display
The Imam further requested that people refrain from photographing or filming sacrificial rituals and uploading such content on social media. He highlighted that the true spirit of Eid ul Adha lies in devotion, discipline, and respect for societal sensitivities.
Health and Religious Considerations
The Islamic Centre also advised that blood from sacrificed animals should not be allowed to flow into drains, as it is both religiously inappropriate and harmful to public health. Instead, remains should be buried properly to ensure natural decomposition.
Calling Zilhijjah one of the holiest months in Islam, Maulana Khalid Rasheed said that sacrifice is an important act of worship for those who can afford it. However, he added that religious observance must go hand in hand with responsibility and adherence to the law.
