Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Friday honoured officials who were attacked while carrying out footpath clearance operations in Bengaluru. The event, held at his office in Vikasa Soudha, underscored the risks frontline officers face in enforcing urban regulations.
Minister Praises Officer Dedication
Speaking at the ceremony, Gowda said that no matter how visionary government schemes may be, their success ultimately depends on the dedication and honesty of implementing officers. He commended the attacked officials for their bravery and commitment to public service, noting that such incidents highlight the challenges of urban governance.
The footpath clearance drive, aimed at reclaiming pedestrian spaces from encroachments, has often led to confrontations with vendors and local residents. In recent weeks, several enforcement officers have reported verbal and physical assaults during such operations.
Background of the Attacks
While the minister did not specify the exact date or location of the attack, sources in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) indicated that the incident occurred in a busy market area where illegal stalls had been set up. The officers were trying to clear the footpath when a group of traders resisted, leading to a scuffle. Police later registered a case against unidentified persons.
Gowda assured the officers that the government stands firmly behind them and will take strict action against those who obstruct lawful duties. He also announced that the state would consider providing additional security measures for field staff involved in similar enforcement activities.
Government's Stance on Encroachment
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to making Bengaluru's footpaths accessible for pedestrians. He stated that the clearance drive will continue despite resistance, and that the administration is working on alternative rehabilitation plans for affected vendors. However, he emphasized that encroachments on public pathways cannot be tolerated.
