Shakuntala Arya, who made history as Delhi’s first woman mayor and served as the president of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha, died on Saturday at the age of 98. Her last rites were conducted at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground, with family members, BJP leaders, and party workers in attendance.
A Pioneering Political Career
Arya was elected as Delhi’s first woman mayor in 1997, a landmark achievement in the city’s political history. Her association with the Bharatiya Janata Party spanned decades, from the late 1980s until around 2005, during which she held key organizational roles. As president of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha, she championed women’s issues within the party and beyond.
Clean Delhi Campaign and Women’s Empowerment
During her tenure as mayor, Arya launched the ‘Clean Delhi Campaign’ in 1997, which aimed to foster civic awareness and cleanliness among residents. Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, condoling her death, highlighted her contributions: “Arya did extensive work in the field of women’s education.
