10 Black Spots on NH-44 in Sonepat: Accidents Down, Deaths Up

The traffic wing of the Sonepat district police has identified 10 black spots on National Highway-44 (NH-44), categorizing them as highly accident-prone areas based on the number of accidents reported within a 500-metre stretch. The identification aims to curb rising fatalities despite an overall decline in accidents.

Accident-Prone Locations on NH-44

Kundli Area

Three black spots were identified in the Kundli area. From Drain No. 8 to Nathupur Flyover, seven fatalities were recorded. From Hans Tailors to Surya Prime Banquet, six deaths occurred. From TR Motors to Drain No. 8, 11 people lost their lives.

Bahalgarh Area

Five black spots were identified in the Bahalgarh area. From Royal Dhaba, Bahalgarh Flyover, to Drain No. 8, nine deaths were reported. From Golden Hut Dhaba to in front of Ashoka University, six fatalities occurred. From Sanjay Motor Store to Bahalgarh Chowk, 12 deaths were recorded. From Ganpat Dhaba/Tau Devi Lal Park to Eldeco, six fatalities were reported. From Max Saloon to Chaap, seven deaths occurred.

Barhi Industrial Area and Murthal

In the Barhi Industrial Area, from Shiv Shakti Properties to Family Friendly Restaurant, six deaths were reported. In the Murthal area, from Rangoli to Sukhdev Dhaba, six deaths were recorded.

Accident Data Comparison: 2025 vs 2026

As per data available up to May 2026, a total of 382 accidents were reported, including 162 fatal accidents in which 179 persons lost their lives. In comparison, 521 accidents were reported in 2025, with 160 fatal accidents resulting in 167 deaths. This represents a 26.88% decline in total accidents but a 1.25% rise in fatal accidents and a 7.19% increase in total accidental deaths.

  • February: 64 accidents (27 fatal, 32 deaths; 37 non-fatal, 68 injured)

  • April: 90 accidents (46 fatal, 53 deaths; 44 non-fatal, 104 injured)
  • May: 64 accidents (21 fatal, 23 deaths; 43 non-fatal, 138 injured)

Police Action and NHAI Measures

Taking serious note of rising fatalities, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) wrote to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), highlighting the identified black spots. The DCP requested immediate corrective measures, including proper signboards, improved lighting, rumble strips to check speeding, speed-limit boards, and closure of illegal cuts at these locations. An Action Taken Report (ATR) was sought within a week.
