Residents and traders on Dehradun’s Chakrata Road have alleged that a choked drain has been causing waterlogging and leaving stagnant water mixed with floating garbage outside shops whenever it rains, despite repeated complaints to the authorities concerned.
Shopkeepers voice frustration over waterlogging
“Water accumulates on the road after every spell of rain, and this has been happening for over a year. Those managing the Hanuman temple and nearby residents have complained to the authorities several times, but to no avail,” said Bala Devi, a shopkeeper in the area. The stagnant water, often mixed with garbage, creates a foul smell that deters customers.
Drain maintenance issues highlighted
Residents said drains were constructed on both sides of the road a few years ago, but poor maintenance has rendered them ineffective. “The drain is choked with garbage and cannot handle the flow of rainwater. As a result, water spills onto the road and surrounding areas,” said Surjeet Singh of Prem Nagar. The problem has persisted for over a year, with no resolution despite multiple complaints.
Impact on local business
Traders said the stagnant water and floating waste have affected business. “The entire stretch stinks. Customers often avoid stopping at our shops because of the foul smell, which affects our business,” said shopkeeper Mohit Thakur. The waterlogging occurs after every rain, making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to pass.
Councillor promises action
Ward 92 councillor Anil Prasad Nautiyal attributed the problem to changes made during road renovation work. “Earlier, the water flowed through the drain, but it was diverted to one side of the road during renovation work carried out by NHAI. While the affected stretch falls within the Cantonment area near Kehri Gaon, we will get the drains cleared within the next two to three days to ensure they function properly before the monsoon,” he said. The councillor assured that the drainage issue would be addressed promptly to prevent further inconvenience.
