Community Spirit Sweeps Through Dibrugarh Neighborhoods
The city of Dibrugarh is witnessing an inspiring wave of community-led cleanliness and beautification, with Wards 13, 14, and 6 recently experiencing a remarkable transformation. This change comes as part of the ongoing 'Swachh Gali' programme, which has successfully merged civic responsibility with creative expression to turn ordinary lanes into vibrant, welcoming spaces.
Art Meets Civic Responsibility in Neighborhood Makeover
The beautification drive saw an extraordinary collaboration among diverse groups, including local artists, interns from Dibrugarh University, the Shrishti NGO team, and enthusiastic residents. Together, they created eye-catching wall paintings and murals across neighborhood lanes, using art as both an educational tool and aesthetic enhancement.
In a particularly heartwarming display, residents of Zig Zag Road took the concept of a welcoming neighborhood to new heights by decorating their main entrance with beautifully arranged diyas (earthen lamps) during a special Sunday event.
Transforming Waste into Treasure
The initiative has championed an innovative approach to waste management, demonstrating how everyday trash can be converted into valuable decorative elements. Rashmi Saikia, a volunteer from the Shrishti NGO, explained their creative methodology.
"We have creatively installed reusable materials such as old tyres and ecobrick bottles at the entrances of individual homes," Saikia stated. "It's a powerful visual message that waste is not just something to be discarded - it can be transformed into attractive elements for beautification."
Citizen Participation Drives Sustainable Change
The programme's success fundamentally depends on citizen participation, and residents have responded with overwhelming solidarity by committing to voluntarily maintain clean lanes. Local resident Shipra Dutta shared her experience of the collective effort.
"When we clean together, the whole neighbourhood feels different," Dutta expressed. "It's amazing to see how a clean gali lifts everyone's spirits and gives us pride in where we live."
Dibrugarh Mayor Saikat Patra emphasized the wide-reaching impact of the initiative, noting its potential for city-wide adoption. "The Swachh Gali movement is about inspiring a mindset of ownership and pride in our surroundings," Patra said. "The programme has already been successfully taken up in several wards of the city, and we aim to make this collaborative model a sustainable habit across all of Dibrugarh."
The transformation in these wards serves as a shining example of how community collaboration, artistic expression, and environmental consciousness can combine to create meaningful, lasting change in urban spaces.
