Guwahati Police Unveil Traffic Plan for Ambubachi Mahayog

The Guwahati police commissionerate has announced a comprehensive traffic management plan for the upcoming Ambubachi Mahayog, with restrictions in effect from June 22 to 26. Lakhs of devotees are expected to visit the Kamakhya temple during this period.

Massive Pilgrim Influx Expected

Police estimate that around eight lakh pilgrims, including those from abroad, will arrive in the city during the five-day event. This is expected to put heavy pressure on roads in western Guwahati, especially around the Nilachal Hills.

Key Traffic Measures

The measures aim to ensure orderly movement of devotees, prevent bottlenecks, and keep routes clear for emergency services. Residents and travellers have been advised to plan their trips in advance.

  • Restricted Access: Access to the temple precinct will remain tightly regulated. Private vehicles will not be allowed beyond designated points near the foothills.
  • Authorised Entry Only: Entry towards the shrine area will be permitted only for authorised vehicles and those carrying special passes issued by the district administration.
  • Airport Route Advisory: Air passengers have been advised to use NH-27 as far as possible while travelling to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to avoid congestion.

Parking and Drop-off Arrangements

Dedicated parking zones and drop-off points have been identified to reduce congestion around Kamakhya and nearby localities. Special arrangements have also been planned to streamline movement of pilgrims arriving at Kamakhya railway station and to facilitate transport for officials deployed on mela duty.

Parking Prohibitions

Traffic police have prohibited roadside parking on multiple stretches around Kamakhya, Pandu, Bharalumukh, and Maligaon. Additional parking arrangements have been made for the expected surge in vehicles.
