Kanpur: India's first Assistive Technology Mart (AT Mart) was inaugurated on Saturday at Benajhabar Road near Motijheel Metro station. The mart aims to provide modern assistive devices and repair services for persons with disabilities and the elderly under one roof.
Inauguration and Vision
Divisional Commissioner Vijayendra Pandian, the chief guest, inaugurated the mart. He expressed hope that this unique facility will significantly ease the lives of people with disabilities and senior citizens by making assistive technology accessible.
The AT Mart was launched to address the shortage of assistive devices under the 'Divyang Sahara Yojana'. Previously, beneficiaries had to visit multiple locations to obtain modern prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs, and other equipment. Now, all needs can be met at a single location.
Three-in-One Model
The mart operates on a 'three-in-one' model, similar to a large showroom. Visitors can view modern appliances firsthand, consult on-site experts to understand device operation, and try products before purchasing at fixed prices.
The facility also offers a comprehensive guarantee and repair services. Spare parts and maintenance for wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prosthetic limbs are readily available, addressing a common challenge faced by users when devices malfunction.
Products Available
The AT Mart stocks electric wheelchairs, modern tricycles, walkers, crutches, digital hearing aids, spectacles, and high-tech prosthetic limbs. All products are designed to improve mobility and quality of life for persons with disabilities.
Expansion Plans
Developed by ALIMCO, a Miniratna undertaking of the Government of India, the Kanpur mart is the nation's first 'Model Mart' operated on a franchise model. Following its success, the scheme will be expanded across the country.
ALIMCO Chairman and Managing Director Praveen Kumar was also present at the inauguration ceremony.
