Lucknow: In response to a series of six suicide attempts and river-jump incidents in recent months, Lucknow Police have proposed installing high-rise fencing, CCTV cameras, and crisis helpline signboards on two Gomti river bridges connecting the 1090 intersection with Samta Mulak Chauraha. The proposal has been sent to the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) with a request to examine and implement the safety measures at the earliest.
Recurring Incidents Prompt Action
According to police, the two bridges have repeatedly witnessed incidents of people jumping into the river, leading to rescue operations, search efforts, and traffic disruptions. Officials said each incident requires deploying police personnel, rescue teams, and traffic management resources. The proposed measures aim to deter such acts and provide immediate assistance to those in distress.
Recommended Safety Features
Police have also recommended displaying mental health and emergency helpline numbers at prominent locations on the bridges to help people in distress seek immediate assistance. Known for their scenic riverfront views, the bridges attract many visitors and selfie-seekers. However, police inspections found that the structures lack adequate-height protective barriers and surveillance systems.
Model Based on Existing Success
Officials suggested adopting a model similar to the RR Bandha bridge, where high protective fencing was installed after safety concerns were raised. Police said no similar incidents have been reported there since the fencing was installed. The LDA is expected to review the proposal and take necessary action to enhance safety on these bridges.
