A division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday allowed the MP Nursing Council to organize the GNM third-year examination for nursing colleges declared fit to operate by the court, and also permitted the council to declare results of the GNM first-year examination for the academic session 2022-23.
The bench, comprising Justice Anand Pathak and Justice B P Sharma, however, barred nursing colleges declared unfit to operate from participating in the exam.
The court heard a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Vishal Baghel, president of the Law Students’ Association, over the mushrooming of nursing colleges across the state lacking infrastructure and manpower to educate students in nursing courses.
In the PIL, the MP High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the credentials of all nursing colleges across Madhya Pradesh. The CBI found only 165 out of 695 nursing colleges fit to operate. Additionally, 89 colleges, which were given a chance to remove the shortcomings pointed out to them, were declared fit after taking corrective steps. The rest were declared unfit and closed.
During the Friday hearing, the MP Nursing Council sought permission to conduct exams in nursing colleges and declare results of exams already conducted. The petitioner objected to holding exams in colleges found unfit to operate.
After hearing both sides, the court allowed the holding of exams only for colleges found fit by the CBI.
