Mumbai: Over 75,000 trees have been planned for the Coastal Road’s 130-acre gardens, which will create a vast new green lung for Mumbai, said Reliance Foundation chairperson Nita Ambani on Friday. She confirmed that work on the project has commenced, with a team of landscape architects, ecologists, and engineers working on the master plan, and 15,000 trees are already on site.
Rich Mix of Flora and Fauna
The gardens will feature a rich mix of flora and fauna, along with attractions such as a tree museum aimed at promoting awareness about biodiversity and conservation. Drawing comparisons with some of the world’s most iconic urban parks, Ambani noted that every great city is defined by a landmark green space—from Central Park in New York and Hyde Park in London to the Botanic Gardens in Singapore. The aspiration, she said, is for the Coastal Road gardens to become a similarly defining public space for Mumbai.
Project Progress and Vision
Ambani emphasized that the project is already underway, with 15,000 trees planted on site. The master plan involves a multidisciplinary team ensuring the gardens become a sustainable and educational hub. The tree museum will serve as a unique feature to educate visitors about local and global plant species.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance urban greenery in Mumbai, aligning with global standards. The gardens are expected to provide recreational space, improve air quality, and support local wildlife.
