The Nashik police have initiated a strict enforcement drive against bikers and three-wheeler drivers who illegally use the flyover on the Mumbai-Agra Highway, specifically the stretch between the Indiranagar underpass and K K Wagh College, starting June 19. Concurrently, authorities have revised the speed limits on the elevated corridor, increasing them to 60 kmph for heavy vehicles and 70 kmph for cars and SUVs to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
Prohibited Vehicles and Restrictions
Police officials confirmed that two-wheelers, three-wheelers, bicycles, and handcarts are banned from the elevated corridor from the Indiranagar jogging track to the Adgaon flyover. This restriction remains in force, and violators will face legal action.
Speed Limit Revision
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approached the city police to revise the earlier speed limit of 50 kmph. After discussions between NHAI officials and Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik in May, the revised limits were approved. The new limits aim to improve traffic efficiency while ensuring safety.
Project Background
The elevated corridor allows motorists to bypass city traffic while passing through Nashik. The project began with a 6.1-km flyover from Indiranagar to Meenatai Thackeray Stadium, along with underpasses and elevated structures from Garware Point, creating an approximately 11 km corridor. To ease congestion beyond K K Wagh College, particularly at Bali Temple Junction, Amrutdham Junction, and Jatra Hotel, a 2.5 km extension linking the existing flyover to Jatra Hotel was undertaken in 2018 and completed in 2021.
