Transgender Individuals Join Home Guard Services in Tamil Nadu Cities

Police commissioners in two major Tamil Nadu cities formally welcomed transgender individuals into the home guard services on Tuesday. This development marks a significant step in the state's efforts toward greater inclusion.

Formal Induction Ceremonies

In Trichy, Police Commissioner N Kamini personally handed appointment orders to five transgender recruits. Simultaneously, in Madurai, Police Commissioner J Loganathan conducted a similar induction ceremony for five more individuals.

These ten new home guard members represent part of a larger group selected through a state government initiative. The pilot project aims to deploy transgender people in auxiliary police roles across Tamil Nadu's major urban centers.

Comprehensive Training Program

Police officials confirmed that all inductees completed an intensive 15-day training program. This training covered essential public safety skills including:

  • Traffic management techniques
  • Crowd control procedures
  • Disaster management measures

Operational Responsibilities

The newly appointed home guard members will assume specific duties in their respective cities. Their primary responsibilities will focus on maintaining public order during busy periods.

They will help streamline vehicle movement and manage pedestrian crowds on major commercial streets. This support will be particularly valuable during festival seasons when these areas experience increased foot and vehicle traffic.

The Tamil Nadu government's pilot project represents a progressive approach to police auxiliary services. By including transgender individuals in home guard roles, the state demonstrates commitment to diversity in public safety operations.

This initiative follows the selection of fifty transgender people for these specialized positions. The successful induction of the first ten individuals in Trichy and Madurai establishes a foundation for broader implementation across other Tamil Nadu cities.
