A six-year-old boy drowned in an open pit filled with rainwater in Greater Noida on Tuesday, highlighting the lack of safety measures around construction sites in the area. The incident occurred in the Bisrakh area, where the pit had been dug for a proposed housing project but left uncovered and unmarked.
No Barricades or Warning Signs
According to local police, the pit was about 10 feet deep and had accumulated water from recent rains. There were no barricades, fences, or warning signs around the perimeter. The child, identified as Aarav Kumar, was playing near the site with friends when he slipped and fell into the water. His friends raised an alarm, but by the time villagers and family members reached the spot, it was too late.
“The pit should have been secured. We have lost our son due to sheer negligence,” said Rajesh Kumar, the father of the victim. He added that the construction company had not taken any precautions despite the area being frequented by children.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Fire brigade personnel were called to the spot after the accident. They retrieved the child’s body from the pit around two hours later. The body was sent for post-mortem. Senior police officer Ashok Kumar said, “An FIR has been registered against the construction company under Indian Penal Code sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). We are investigating the matter.”
Local residents staged a protest, demanding strict action against the developer and compensation for the family. They claimed that similar incidents had occurred in the past but no action was taken.
Recurring Safety Lapses in Greater Noida
This tragedy is not an isolated incident. In 2023, a three-year-old girl drowned in a similar open pit in the same area. Activists say that rapid urbanization and construction have led to many such hazards. “Developers often dig pits and leave them open for months. Municipal authorities fail to enforce safety norms. This must change,” said Neetu Singh, a local activist.
The boy’s mother, Sunita Devi, said, “We have lost our only son. This negligence cannot be forgiven. We want the accused to be punished.” The family has been promised financial assistance from the district administration, but they insist on a thorough investigation.
Official Response and Demands
District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma said that the administration would take strict action against the builder. “We have issued a notice to the developer and are verifying all safety protocols. A compensation of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the family. We will ensure that all such pits in the area are identified and secured,” he stated.
However, residents remain skeptical. “Every year, children die in such accidents. The government only reacts after a tragedy. We need proactive measures like regular inspections and heavy penalties for violations,” said Rajesh Sharma, a local council member.
