The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has achieved a significant breakthrough in Maharashtra's civic body elections. Led by Asaduddin Owaisi, the party registered its first-ever victory in the prestigious Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Historic Win in Mumbai
AIMIM candidate Mehzabin Khan secured victory from Ward No. 134 in Mumbai. This triumph marks the party's inaugural seat in India's wealthiest municipal corporation. The BMC elections saw AIMIM winning two seats so far, with official trends indicating the party leads in two additional wards as counting continues for the 227-member corporation.
Strong Statewide Performance
Beyond Mumbai, AIMIM demonstrated impressive results across several municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The party emerged as a notable contender in multiple urban centers.
Key Municipal Corporation Results
- Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation: AIMIM secured 16 seats out of 116 wards
- Dhule Municipal Corporation: The party won eight seats in the 74-member civic body
- Amravati Municipal Corporation: AIMIM bagged three seats in the 87-ward corporation
- Jalna Municipal Corporation: The party won two seats in the 65-member municipal body
- Malegaon Municipal Corporation: AIMIM emerged victorious in four wards out of 84
- Parbhani Municipal Corporation: The party secured one seat in the 65-ward civic body
Confidence Before Results
AIMIM national spokesperson Waris Pathan expressed strong confidence ahead of the election results. Speaking to ANI, Pathan dismissed exit polls as unreliable indicators of final outcomes. He asserted that exit polls often fail to reflect actual voting patterns and predicted substantial gains for the party once counting concluded.
"We remain confident that people have blessed us with their votes," Pathan stated. "By tomorrow evening, results will become clear, and AIMIM will achieve great success."
Maharashtra's Civic Poll Landscape
Maharashtra conducted elections for 29 municipal corporations, including the high-profile Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Political stakes remained particularly high for the Thackeray brothers and the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. This followed the ruling Mahayuti alliance's impressive victory in last year's assembly polls.
The civic elections represented a crucial test for political parties across Maharashtra's urban centers. Voters determined leadership for municipal corporations that manage essential urban services and local governance.
