Dharwad Launches 'Akka Pade' Women's Safety Squad for Swift Protection
Akka Pade Women's Safety Vehicle Flagged Off in Dharwad

In a significant move to bolster women's safety, the district of Dharwad officially launched its dedicated Akka Pade vehicle on Monday. The initiative was flagged off by District Minister Santosh Lad and Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu, marking the operational start of a women-only police response unit in the region.

What is the Akka Pade Initiative?

The Akka Pade is a state government project launched across every district, designed as a swift-action force for the protection of women and children. Speaking at the launch event, Minister Santosh Lad explained that the squad, formed under the women & child development department, comprises women home guards. Its core mission is to offer immediate aid and protection to vulnerable women and children facing danger or distress.

The squad is envisioned to function dually as a responsive safety unit and an educational force within the community. By building trust and establishing a friendly, reliable presence, the Akka Pade aims to encourage victims and their families to seek help without fear.

Operational Duties and Patrol Strategy

The trained Akka Pade teams will conduct regular patrols in identified sensitive areas and respond promptly to distress calls. Their operational schedule is structured in two shifts: from 7 am to 2 pm and from 2 pm to 8 pm.

Team members will be strategically deployed at key locations, including:

  • Schools, colleges, and women's hostels
  • Bus stands and railway stations
  • Local markets and tourist spots
  • Places of worship and other sensitive areas

Beyond Policing: Awareness and Community Coordination

The scope of the Akka Pade extends far beyond immediate response. The squad will actively conduct awareness campaigns in educational institutions and neighbourhoods, educating the public on:

  • Gender equality and child protection laws
  • Legal rights and available helplines
  • Proper procedures for reporting crimes

A critical function of the squad will be to facilitate coordination with various support systems. This includes linking victims with Child Welfare Committees, women's helplines, NGOs, legal aid services, and shelter homes to ensure comprehensive counselling and support.

The initiative is set to benefit a wide range of cases, including women and girls facing harassment or domestic violence, and children affected by neglect, trafficking, child marriage, labour, begging, or substance abuse. Through its proactive awareness and educational drives, the programme aims to create a safer and more informed society for all.
