In a significant political development, the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) has taken a firm stand against forces that threaten social harmony while signaling a pragmatic approach to upcoming electoral alliances. The party's general council, meeting in Thanjavur on Monday, passed a series of resolutions that outline its core principles and strategic direction.
A Nuanced Shift in Political Posture
Addressing the media after the meeting, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran articulated a notable evolution in the party's stance. He emphasized that the welfare of Tamil Nadu's citizens supersedes traditional political labels of friend or foe, especially during election seasons. "During the election period, we do not need to look at someone as an enemy, a traitor, or a friend. The welfare of Tamil Nadu's people and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam remain our top priorities," Dhinakaran stated. This marks a nuanced shift from more confrontational positions previously associated with the party.
Key Resolutions and Alliance Strategy
The council passed a total of 18 resolutions, covering a wide range of issues. One of the most critical resolutions empowers Dhinakaran himself to make the final decision regarding political alliances. The party assured that this decision, crucial for the upcoming polls, will be finalized within the next month, with Tamil Nadu's welfare as the central focus.
Dhinakaran was unequivocal about the party's ambitions, asserting that AMMK would be part of the winning alliance and, consequently, the next state government. He predicted a coalition government and expressed confidence in securing a share of power. "The alliance we join will form the government. We will secure a share in power. There is every possibility that we will serve as ministers in the elected government," he said, ruling out any compromise on sharing power.
Stand on Social Harmony and Public Welfare
A major resolution explicitly rejected any group that disrupts public peace or religious harmony in Tamil Nadu. It condemned politics based on divisions of religion, caste, or God, stating such tactics would not succeed in the state. The council also held the current state government accountable for tensions arising from its alleged failure to comply with a court order to light the Karthigai Deepam at Thiruparankundram.
On the policy front, the resolutions advocated for the continuation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme without imposing any financial burden on the state. Furthermore, the AMMK urged the Central government to expedite the implementation of Metro rail projects in the major cities of Madurai and Coimbatore.
The meeting in Thanjavur has clearly set the stage for AMMK's electoral strategy, blending a commitment to social cohesion with a sharp focus on pragmatic politics and a definitive claim to a role in the next administration.
