As hundreds of thousands of devotees flock to the sacred hill shrine of Srisailam for the annual Maha Shivaratri Brahmotsavam of Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy, the Andhra Pradesh government has been compelled to take swift and decisive action. This urgent intervention comes in response to a flood of complaints regarding severe crowd mismanagement and a critical shortage of basic amenities at the pilgrimage site.

The government's rapid response was triggered by the widespread circulation of disturbing videos on Tuesday. These viral clips showed devotees expressing deep frustration after being forced to wait for several hours in the Rs 500 special darshan queue without access to even drinking water. Additional footage depicted police personnel struggling to control surging crowds near barricades set up for touch darshan, further fueling public anger and concern.
Many pilgrims accused the temple administration of grossly inadequate planning, despite clear forecasts of a massive turnout for this major festival. The visual evidence of hardship faced by those undertaking the sacred journey sparked significant backlash across social media platforms and local communities.
Chief Minister Directs Immediate Remedial Measures
Taking serious cognizance of the deteriorating situation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu conducted a high-level review from Delhi. He was joined by the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and other senior officials to assess crowd conditions and facility standards not only at Srisailam but also at other prominent Shiva temples across the state.
The Chief Minister issued strict directives for immediate and robust corrective measures, emphasizing that pilgrim numbers are expected to increase dramatically as the actual Shivaratri day approaches. He specifically instructed Endowments Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha to maintain close, personal oversight of all arrangements at Srisailam to prevent further hardship to devotees.
Focus on Dignified Pilgrimage Experience
CM Naidu underscored the fundamental right of pilgrims, many traveling great distances, to complete their darshan without excessive delays. He mandated the provision of proper accommodation, sufficient drinking water, and adequate food supplies as non-negotiable requirements. Clear instructions were also disseminated that no government official or security personnel should behave in any manner that causes inconvenience or shows disrespect to devotees.
