Prayagraj: The Allahabad University (AU) administration has taken stringent action against students involved in repeated violent incidents within its premises. Twelve hostel inmates have been suspended, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against 14 students, including one minor, in connection with bomb hurling, stone pelting, and clashes that occurred inside the PCB and Sir Sunder Lal (SSL) hostels.
Complaint and Police Action
The action was initiated following a complaint filed by chief proctor Atul Narayan Singh at the Colonelganj police station. The police registered a case under serious sections based on allegations that some students and outsiders were repeatedly disturbing the hostel atmosphere and coercing junior students into participating in violent activities.
According to the university proctor, six inmates each from PCB and SSL hostels have been issued notices and may be asked to vacate the hostel depending on the final investigation. They have been suspended from the university until the probe is complete and have been directed to report to the university along with their parents.
Details of the Incidents
The complaint detailed that incidents of late-night bomb hurling, stone pelting, abuse, and assault had been occurring for several days around the PCB and SSL hostels. University officials identified the accused students through CCTV footage, security recordings, and videos collected during the inquiry. Most of the students named in the FIR are enrolled in BA, BSc, and BCom courses and reside in university hostels.
The complaint further alleged that a student previously expelled from the SSL hostel was illegally staying in room 88 and was leading several violent incidents. This room was officially allotted to two other students, who allegedly provided shelter to the expelled individual. Additionally, another youth was reportedly staying illegally in the PCB hostel. Based on these findings, both allottee students were also named in the FIR.
Security Lapses and Rivalry
University authorities reported that CCTV cameras installed in the hostels were deliberately turned away during the clashes, while one camera near the badminton court in SSL hostel was stolen. Officials alleged that hostel residents covered their faces before carrying out stone pelting and bomb hurling outside rival hostel gates.
Sources indicated that the clashes were linked to rivalry between a few key students from both hostels, who allegedly dragged other residents into the conflict. During the investigation, university officials obtained several videos that helped identify the accused before filing the FIR.
Previous Offenses
The administration also claimed that one outsider involved in the incidents had been expelled earlier in a ragging case, while another had previously been accused of attacking a police officer.
