Congress Faces Internal Turmoil Over Bagalkot By-Poll Ticket
In the wake of former Congress MLA HY Meti's passing, the political landscape of Bagalkot constituency has become increasingly complex. The Election Commission has initiated preparations for the crucial by-election, but within the Congress party, a simmering controversy over ticket allocation threatens to disrupt unity.
Family Dynamics Complicate Candidate Selection
Initially, speculation centered around three primary contenders from the Meti family: sons Mallikarjun and Umesh, along with elder daughter Bayakka Meti, who previously served as Zilla Panchayat president. Most Congress leaders reportedly favored granting the ticket to one of Meti's sons, with even minister Satish Jarkiholi facing demands to prioritize family members.
However, a surprising development has emerged through social media channels. Posts circulating widely feature photographs of HY Meti alongside his daughter Mahadevi Meti (Yargal), accompanied by statements that have ignited fresh political debate. One particularly notable message declares, "Without interference from anyone in Guledagudda, I will work for the people of my constituency. My politics does not depend on Guledagudda. The people of Bagalkot are my strength."
Social Media Campaign Fuels Speculation
The reference to Guledgudda in these posts points to a close and influential aide of the late HY Meti, adding layers to the political narrative. Another widely shared message reinforces this emerging candidacy: "I am committed to serving the people of the constituency with complete dedication, firm loyalty and honest administration."
These developments come despite recent efforts to present a united front. Just days earlier, Meti's sons issued a public statement urging party workers to avoid confusion, emphasizing that "the entire Meti family and Congress workers in the constituency are still grieving" and that no internal discussions about ticket allocation had occurred.
The statement further clarified that "the Meti family is committed to the decision of the party high command" and that workers should not be misled by rumors. It concluded with assurance that "the entire Meti family will abide by that decision" and that "there is no confusion or difference of opinion within our family."
Silence Speaks Volumes Amid Growing Controversy
Despite these assurances, the appearance of pro-Mahadevi social media campaigns within four to five days has raised significant questions. The widespread sharing of these posts, coupled with the conspicuous silence from Meti family members regarding this new development, has fueled speculation about potential internal competition.
This situation is particularly delicate as the Congress party had reportedly conducted internal surveys to determine which of Meti's sons might be the stronger candidate. Before these assessments could be formally discussed within party platforms, the emergence of a fourth potential contender has complicated the decision-making process.
The current scenario highlights the challenges political parties face when navigating succession following the death of a prominent leader. As Bagalkot prepares for the by-election, the Congress party must carefully balance family sentiments, local worker expectations, and electoral strategy while maintaining party discipline and unity.
