Bhopal Water Crisis: Supply Cut & Contamination Fears Hit Multiple Areas
Bhopal Water Supply Disrupted Due to Power Shutdown

Residents across multiple neighborhoods in Bhopal are grappling with a dual challenge of water supply disruption and contamination concerns. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a scheduled shutdown of a key water treatment facility, leaving many areas dry.

Scheduled Power Cut Halts Water Treatment

The crisis stems from a planned power shutdown by the Madhya Pradesh Power Distribution Company. The Kerwa Water Treatment Plant, a major source of water for the city, will remain non-operational on Sunday, January 4. This closure is due to essential maintenance work on the High Tension (HT) feeder line at Kerwa Dam.

The maintenance window is scheduled from 10 AM to 4 PM. During this six-hour period, the plant will be unable to process and supply water to the zones it serves.

List of Affected Neighborhoods

The water supply disruption will impact numerous colonies in BMC Zone No. 18 and Zone No. 19. The BMC has identified the following areas that will experience a complete halt in water supply:

  • Damkheda
  • Sarvadharma Colony
  • Amarnath Colony
  • Ambedkar Nagar
  • Mahabali Nagar
  • Sainath Nagar
  • Kanha Kunj
  • Good Shepherd
  • Danish Kunj
  • Rajharsh Colony
  • Ganesh Nagar
  • Om Nagar
  • Rajvaidya Colony
  • Sankhedi
  • Banshkhedi
  • Priyanka Nagar
  • Garib Nagar
  • 610 Quarters
  • Sumitra Parisar

The civic body has stated that other adjoining areas may also face similar disruptions.

BMC's Appeal to Citizens

In an official press release issued on Saturday, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to citizens. The BMC has appealed to the public for their understanding and cooperation during this period of essential infrastructure maintenance.

The timing of this shutdown has exacerbated existing anxieties among residents regarding water quality and safety. The disruption comes at a time when many in the city are already concerned about potential water contamination, creating a compounded crisis for households.

Authorities have advised residents in the listed areas to store water in advance and use their supply judiciously until normal services resume post the maintenance work.
