Currently, Bicholim town has approximately 5 to 6 designated parking areas. These include spaces near the prominent Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan, the court complex, and various market areas. However, these existing facilities fall drastically short of meeting the daily demand, especially during peak hours.
The situation has reached a point where locals, left with no other option, are compelled to park their vehicles along lanes marked as no-parking zones. Deepak Naik, a resident, voiced a common grievance, stating that traffic police frequently impose fines for parking on the left-side lane in front of the Maidan. "Even when there are more vehicles parked here, it does not create any congestion," Naik argued. He appealed for leniency, emphasizing that fines are being levied without considering the ground reality of having no other parking options available to the public.
Official Response and Promised Solution
In response to the growing public discontent, a local civic representative has indicated a potential resolution on the horizon. BMC councillor Kundan Falari addressed the issue, pinning hopes on a new infrastructure project. According to Falari, the long-standing parking woes are expected to be alleviated once the parking facility behind the new Bicholim market becomes operational.
The councillor also called for public cooperation during this interim period, acknowledging the challenges faced by vehicle users. The upcoming facility is anticipated to provide a more organized and centralized solution to decongest the town centre and reduce illegal parking incidents.
