Karnataka BJP has failed as an opposition party due to its 'adjustment politics', according to Kumar Bangarappa, a prominent party leader. He stated that the party is now preparing to return to power in the 2028 Assembly election.
Bangarappa's criticism of BJP's opposition role
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on 20 June 2026, Bangarappa said that the BJP's performance as the main opposition party in Karnataka has been lackluster. He attributed this to a pattern of 'adjustment politics' where the party allegedly compromised its stance for short-term gains. "The BJP has not been able to effectively challenge the ruling government because of internal adjustments and compromises," he remarked.
Plans for 2028 Assembly election
Bangarappa expressed confidence that the BJP would bounce back in the next state elections. "We are already working on our strategy to win the 2028 Assembly election and form the next government," he added. The party is focusing on strengthening its grassroots presence and addressing key issues affecting the state.
Context of Karnataka politics
The BJP had previously held power in Karnataka from 2019 to 2023 under Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. However, the party lost the 2023 Assembly election to the Congress, which formed the government under Siddaramaiah. Since then, the BJP has struggled to assert itself as a strong opposition, with internal factionalism and leadership disputes often making headlines.
