The BJP has quietly appointed senior Rajasthan leader Satish Poonia as the new in-charge for Punjab, tasking him with rebuilding the party organization ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. Poonia, 64, was hand-picked by BJP president Nitin Nabin and general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh after his success as Haryana in-charge, where he helped the party achieve a hat-trick in the 2024 state elections.
Poonia's Proven Track Record in Haryana
Poonia was widely credited as a key delivery person in the BJP's winning strategy for the 2024 Haryana elections. Under his guidance, the party expanded its non-Jat consolidation and secured a third consecutive term, a feat rarely achieved in the state's political history. His mild-mannered and methodical approach was seen as instrumental in broadening the BJP's appeal beyond traditional vote banks.
Background and Experience
A senior leader from neighbouring Rajasthan, Poonia has served as the BJP's Rajasthan president and later as Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan assembly. He was recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan alongside Alka Gurjar. Notably, Poonia also headed the BJP Yuva Morcha's Punjab youth wing earlier in his career, giving him familiarity with the state's political dynamics.
Transition After Vijay Rupani's Death
Poonia takes over from Vijay Rupani, the former Gujarat chief minister who was the last BJP Punjab in-charge. Rupani died in the Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12, 2025. Since then, the Punjab BJP has been functioning without a full-time in-charge, with only co-in-charge Narinder Raina, a J&K MLA, managing affairs. The party structure is now being restored with Poonia's appointment.
Blueprint for Punjab Organization
The central BJP has given Poonia the go-ahead to prepare a blueprint for the Punjab party organization and hold ground-level meetings across the state. He has already begun informal engagements, starting last week, and has held preliminary meetings in Chandigarh to assess the ground situation and plan the way forward. Alongside Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who is actively involved in Punjab, Poonia is tasked with energizing the rank and file and ensuring the party is battle-ready for the 2027 elections.
Formal Announcement Expected Soon
A formal announcement of Poonia's appointment is expected shortly, as Nitin Nabin is in the process of overhauling the party structure. In the interim, Poonia has been directed to meet Punjab leaders and consolidate the grassroots organization to enlarge the party's base in the election-bound state.
