Mumbai BMC Election 2026: Key Details on Results and Voting Process
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election 2026 is currently in progress across Mumbai. Polling stations throughout the city remain open until 5:30 pm today. Officials estimate that approximately 1 crore voters will participate in this crucial civic poll.
Voting Underway with Significant Turnout
Voting activities are taking place across all 227 wards in Greater Mumbai. By 11:30 am, the BMC had recorded a voter turnout of 17.73 percent. This election marks a significant moment for Mumbaikars, who are casting their votes after a four-year gap. The previous BMC election occurred in 2017.
On December 15, 2025, the State Election Commission (SEC) released the election timeline for 29 corporations, including the Mumbai civic body. The election features around 1,700 candidates competing for 227 seats. Among these candidates, 879 are women and 821 are men.
Counting Process and Result Announcement
The counting of votes will commence on January 16 at 10 am. Unlike the 2017 election, where counting happened simultaneously, this year's process will follow a phased approach. Counting will occur at 23 different locations across Mumbai and its suburbs.
Each returning officer (RO) in Mumbai oversees a minimum of 10 constituencies. At any given time, counting will proceed for two constituencies under a single RO's jurisdiction. Once these two constituencies are completed, authorities will move to the next set.
With more than 20 returning officers involved, this batch-by-batch method will cover all 227 wards efficiently. The staggered counting aims to ensure accuracy and transparency in the result declaration.
Voter Participation and Accessibility
Mumbaikars have shown enthusiasm in exercising their democratic rights. The election sees participation from diverse voter groups, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Wheelchair support and other facilities are available at polling stations to assist these voters.
The high estimated voter count of 1 crore underscores the importance of this election for Mumbai's future governance. Residents are keenly watching as the city prepares to elect new corporators who will shape local policies and development.
As voting continues until evening, all eyes are on the counting process scheduled for tomorrow. The results will determine the composition of the BMC, impacting Mumbai's administrative direction for the coming years.
