Chamarajanagar District Administration Prepares to Declare 67 New Revenue Villages

The Chamarajanagar district administration in Karnataka is on the verge of a significant administrative expansion, with preparations underway to declare an additional 67 villages as revenue villages. This move follows the completion of a final draft, which is set to be announced imminently, marking a pivotal step in formalizing these settlements.

Current Status and Identification Process

Currently, the district comprises 408 villages. Officials from the revenue department have meticulously identified 67 human habitations for this upgrade. Notable examples include Gollarahatti, Kuruburahatti, and Majare. The declaration as revenue villages is expected to catalyze development works in these areas, providing residents with enhanced access to government facilities.

For years, residents of these settlements have been deprived of official benefits due to their unrecorded status. The upgrade will enable them to obtain government records for their properties, such as RTCs (Record of Rights, Tenancy and Crops), residential certificates, and other essential documents. This regularization is crucial for availing loans and other governmental support.

Administrative Preparations and Norms

The district administration and revenue department officials have prepared comprehensive records for these villages, awaiting the final notification from the government. Previously, these records were scattered across different survey numbers of neighboring villages, complicating administrative processes.

According to established norms, a settlement must meet specific criteria to be declared a revenue village:

  • At least 50 families must reside there.
  • The population should be a minimum of 250.
  • Ownership of at least 100 acres of land is required.

However, relaxations are provided for forest fringe villages located in hilly areas, acknowledging their unique geographical challenges.

Breakdown by Taluk

The identification spans across multiple taluks within Chamarajanagar district:

  1. Chamarajanagar Taluk: 15 habitations identified, including Vadgalapuradahundi, Kagalwadimole, Nallurumole, Halepura, Saragurumole, Kaduvinakatte, and Panyadahundi.
  2. Hanur Taluk: 10 villages identified, such as Naganatta, Kempaiahanahatti, Doddamalapura, Chennur, and K Gundapura.
  3. Kollegal Taluk: 11 villages identified, including Mallanahallimala, Kajjihundi, Silkalpura, and Kunthurumole.
  4. Gundlupet Taluk: 12 villages identified, examples being Halahalli, Dadadahalli, Kodagapura, Mallammanahundi, Rangupura, Kadathal Katte Hundi, Ranganathapura, and Kurubarahundi.

Official Statements and Future Implications

In an interview with TOI, Chamarajanagar Additional Deputy Commissioner T Javaregowda confirmed that the district administration has identified 67 human settlements for declaration. He noted that the revenue department has collected all necessary records for 51 villages and submitted them for government approval, with records for the remaining villages also forwarded.

Javaregowda emphasized that the declaration will officially regularize these settlements, enabling residents to receive critical land records and certificates post-notification. This administrative recognition is expected to streamline development initiatives and improve living standards.

Honnur Honnappa, Chief of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Chamarajanagar district unit, welcomed the move, highlighting its benefits for property records and government loans. However, he pointed out that several habitations remain excluded and appealed to the state government and district administration to identify and declare the remaining settlements as revenue villages to ensure comprehensive coverage.

This initiative represents a significant stride towards inclusive governance and rural development in Chamarajanagar, potentially setting a precedent for similar actions across Karnataka.
