Mass Protest March in Churachandpur Over Unresolved Killings and BJP MLA's Death
Hundreds of volunteers from the Central Village Defence Forces (CVDF) and local residents staged a significant road march in Churachandpur on Friday evening. The demonstration was a powerful protest against the killing of Kuki-Zo people since May 3, 2023, and specifically highlighted the unresolved death of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who succumbed to injuries from a mob attack in Imphal three years ago.
March Route and Convergence at Lamka Public Ground
The march commenced at 5:47 PM from the CVDF office, strategically splitting into two groups to maximize visibility and impact. One group proceeded along the main road directly to Lamka Public Ground, while the other took a longer route through key areas including Gangpualkoi, Pearsonmun, Bungmual, Phailien, and Tipaimukh. Both groups ultimately converged at the ground, symbolizing unity in their demand for justice.
CVDF Officer Rose Voices Frustration Over Lack of Justice
CVDF liaison officer Rose articulated the core grievances driving the protest. "The march is to protest against injustice in a democratic country," she stated emphatically. "Justice has not been given not only to those who died and suffered but even to those displaced. We have the freedom to protest democratically." She further emphasized the broader implications, noting, "Even when a serving BJP MLA has not been given justice after three years, how can the rest of the slain people expect justice?"
While affirming the protest's democratic nature, Rose issued a stark warning: "It is not a threat, but a day will come when people may turn violent and rebellious." This statement underscores the growing frustration and potential for escalation if grievances remain unaddressed.
Banners and Chants Highlight Key Demands
During the march, volunteers carried banners with poignant messages such as "Justice for All Martyrs" and "Expedite Political Autonomy," reflecting dual calls for accountability and self-governance. The streets echoed with chants of "Justice, Justice for Zogam," reinforcing the community's unwavering demand for fairness and recognition.
