Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's Shukrana Yatra, organized to mark the completion of one year of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, resulted in significant traffic disruptions in Fatehgarh Sahib district on Tuesday. The yatra, which started from the historic Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, saw heavy security arrangements and road closures that caused inconvenience to the common public.
Traffic Congestion and Diversions
The yatra route, stretching from Fatehgarh Sahib to Chamkaur Sahib, witnessed massive traffic jams as several roads were blocked for the movement of the chief minister's convoy. Commuters faced long delays, especially on the Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib road and the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway. The police had to divert traffic to alternative routes, leading to further congestion in nearby areas.
Public Inconvenience
Local residents and daily commuters expressed their frustration over the sudden traffic restrictions. Many were stuck in traffic for hours, missing important appointments and work deadlines. Students and office-goers were particularly affected, as the yatra coincided with peak morning hours. Shopkeepers in the area also reported a drop in business due to the roadblocks.
Security Measures
Elaborate security arrangements were made for the yatra, with Punjab Police deploying additional personnel along the route. The chief minister's convoy was accompanied by a large number of security vehicles, further contributing to the traffic chaos. Despite the inconvenience, the police maintained that the measures were necessary to ensure the safety of the chief minister and the public.
Political Significance
The Shukrana Yatra was a key event for the AAP government, aimed at thanking the public for their support in the 2022 assembly elections. CM Mann addressed multiple gatherings along the route, highlighting the achievements of his government in the past year. However, the traffic woes overshadowed the political message for many residents.
Reactions from Commuters
Several commuters took to social media to complain about the situation. A local resident, Rajinder Kaur, said, "We understand the importance of such events, but the authorities should have planned better to minimize inconvenience. I was stuck for over two hours on my way to work." Another commuter, Harpreet Singh, added, "The police should have informed the public in advance about the road closures. It was a complete mess."
In response to the criticism, a senior police official stated that they had issued advisories through local media and social media platforms. However, many residents claimed they were unaware of the diversions. The incident has once again raised questions about the planning and execution of political events in the state.
