Congress Joins TVK Alliance, Reshapes Chennai Council

Chennai: The alliance equations inside the Greater Chennai Corporation council are set for a significant shift as the Congress party has joined the TVK-led alliance following the state assembly elections. Previously, Congress, with 13 councillors, was a part of the ruling front in the DMK-majority council, which enjoyed a total of 153 out of 200 councillors.

Alliance Partners' Strategy

Alliance partners such as CPM, CPI, VCK, and IUML, which have only extended outside support to the TVK government, are maintaining a similar strategy. Together, these alliance partners account for 23 councillors. Additionally, TVK has the support of one independent councillor, Rajan Barnabass of Manali, who joined the party earlier this year.

Issue-Based Approach

Amirda Varshini, Congress councillor from Mylapore's ward 126, stated that the plan is to take a call based on the issue and the council proceedings on that day. "Naturally, we will be in an opposing position as the alliance changed, but our responses will be based on the issues that come up. We've maintained a good rapport with Mayor R Priya too," she said.

VCK councillor B Yazhini echoed a similar sentiment, saying they too will adopt an issue-based approach. "We have given outside support to TVK in the state. In the council too, we will respond to issues based on how the floor is on the specific day," she explained.
