The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has issued a critical 48-hour ultimatum to authorities in Manipur, demanding the immediate apprehension of those responsible for the killing of two Kuki civilians. The organization has warned that if arrests are not made within this timeframe, village volunteers will be compelled to take preemptive defensive measures to protect their land and people.
Details of the Tragic Incident
CoTU identified the victims as Thangin Baite from Thawai Kuki village and Thangboimang Khongsai from Shankai village. According to the organization's press statement, both men had gone to repair water channels for their paddy fields when they went missing. Their bodies were later recovered, with CoTU alleging they were killed by armed Tangkhul militants operating in the area.
The organization reported that one additional person suffered a bullet injury to the leg during the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Escalating Tensions and Failed Peace Efforts
CoTU has accused armed Tangkhul militants of systematically instigating Tangkhul villagers to stake claims over lands belonging to Kuki-Zo communities in Ukhrul district. The organization claims this is based on an ethnocentric narrative targeting the Kuki-Zo community.
"It was not the first such incident but culmination of a fabricated narrative to evict Kuki-Zos from Ukhrul district by unprovoked firing at cultivators in paddy fields to instill a fear psychosis in the area," CoTU stated, referencing a March 11 incident at Thawai Kuki.
Despite intervention from newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Losii Dikho and civil society organizations from both communities, peace initiatives have reportedly failed due to non-compliance from the Tangkhul community.
Kuki-Zo Council Condemns Killings and Political Marginalization
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has strongly condemned what it describes as the brutal killing of two innocent Kuki-Zo villagers whose bodies were discovered on Thursday. "Such a merciless and inhumane act against innocent civilians is deeply shocking," the KZC stated in their response.
The council highlighted what it perceives as unequal concern from authorities, noting that while 18 Tangkhul individuals were reportedly detained in connection with the disappearance of the two men, the Chief Minister of Manipur and several organizations appeared more focused on their detention than on the fate of the missing Kuki-Zo villagers who were later found murdered.
"This clearly reflects the painful reality that Kuki-Zo lives continue to be treated as insignificant in Manipur," the KZC asserted. The organization emphasized that their demand for a Union Territory with legislature is not merely political but essential for the survival and future of the Kuki-Zo people.
