Weekend Closure Ordered
The Delhi government has directed all liquor shops in the capital to close at 8 PM on weekends, effective immediately, in response to ongoing protests by the Common Janta Party (CJP). The move is aimed at preventing potential disturbances and ensuring public order during the demonstrations.
According to the excise department notification, the revised timing applies to all retail outlets selling liquor, including wine shops and vends. On weekdays, shops will continue to operate as per the existing schedule, typically from 10 AM to 10 PM.
Reason Behind the Decision
Officials cited safety concerns after CJP protesters gathered near several liquor outlets in the past week, demanding a rollback of what they call 'unfair price hikes' under the new excise policy. 'The decision is temporary and will be reviewed based on the situation,' said a senior government official requesting anonymity.
The CJP, a local political outfit, has been staging protests across Delhi since July 20, alleging that the government's excise reforms have made liquor less affordable for common citizens. The party claims that prices have risen by up to 15% on popular brands.
Impact on Consumers and Businesses
Liquor shop owners have expressed concern over the early closure, fearing loss of business. 'Weekends are our busiest days. This will hurt our revenue significantly,' said Rajesh Kumar, a shopkeeper in Karol Bagh. The All Delhi Liquor Vendors Association estimates that the 8 PM shutdown could lead to a 20% drop in weekend sales.
Customers are also likely to be affected, with many accustomed to purchasing alcohol later in the evening. 'I work late on Saturdays. Now I'll have to rush to buy before 8 PM,' said Ankit Sharma, a resident of Lajpat Nagar.
CJP's Reaction
The CJP welcomed the government's move but demanded further action. 'While we appreciate the administration heeding our concerns, the real issue is the exorbitant pricing. We will continue our protests until prices are reduced,' said CJP spokesperson Meena Devi in a statement. The party has scheduled a bigger rally on Sunday at Jantar Mantar.

Delhi's excise policy has been a contentious issue since the introduction of new licensing norms in 2025, which aimed to curb illegal sale and promote revenue.
