Delhi taxi drivers' unions have announced a three-day strike from May 21, demanding a fare hike. The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) on Monday wrote to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, outlining their demands.
Reasons for the Strike
The unions are seeking an increase in taxi fares to offset rising operational costs, including fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, and insurance. They argue that the current fare structure is unsustainable for drivers, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet.
Key Demands
- Revision of minimum fare and per-kilometer charges
- Adjustment for inflation and increased input costs
- Better working conditions and social security measures
Impact on Commuters
The strike is expected to affect thousands of daily commuters in the national capital, particularly those relying on taxis for airport transfers, office commutes, and other essential travel. The unions have assured that emergency services will be exempted.
Government Response
As of now, no official response has been received from the Delhi government or the Lieutenant Governor's office. The AIMTC has urged authorities to intervene and resolve the issue before the strike begins.
This is not the first time taxi unions have resorted to strikes to press for fare revisions. Similar protests have been held in the past, often leading to temporary disruptions in public transport.
