DMK Spokesman Highlights Congress Alliance History Amid Campaign Launch
In a significant political statement, DMK spokesman T K S Elangovan emphasized on Saturday that the Congress party has never demanded a share in power throughout their alliance, even during periods when the DMK held a minority position in the state legislature. Speaking to reporters at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, Elangovan provided historical context to counter recent demands from some Congress voices.
Historical Alliance Without Power Demands
Elangovan clarified that the Congress leadership in Delhi has consistently refrained from making such demands. "Congress has been in alliance with us since 2004 but did not demand share in power even once," he stated. He specifically referenced the year 2006, when the DMK did not have sufficient numbers in the legislature, yet Congress supported the government from outside without seeking ministerial positions.
"Even now, the Congress leadership did not demand share in power, and only some random voices in Congress placed this demand," Elangovan added, distinguishing between official party stance and individual opinions.
DMK's Statewide Campaign Strategy
The DMK is poised to launch an extensive state-wide campaign titled 'Tamil Nadu Thalaikuniyaadhu' (TN will not bow down), commencing on February 1. This ambitious initiative will feature:
- 22 star campaigners traveling to all 234 constituencies
- Public meetings and indoor sessions with various stakeholders
- 'Thinnai pracharam' or verandah campaigns for grassroots outreach
Elangovan, alongside Thousand Lights MLA N Ezhilan and DMK MP Kanimozhi N V N Somu, outlined the campaign's dual objectives during the press interaction.
Campaign Objectives and Political Counter-Narratives
The campaign aims to achieve two primary goals:
- Highlight the schemes and ideological achievements of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu
- Expose how the BJP-led central government has allegedly failed the state by not allocating due funds for various development projects
Ezhilan, who serves as a star campaigner, criticized the AIADMK for its alliance with the BJP, accusing them of remaining passive while the central government acted against state rights. "AIADMK, by aligning with BJP, remained a mute spectator when government at the Centre acted against rights of the state," he asserted.
Kanimozhi addressed law-and-order narratives, countering opposition claims by citing Union government data. "Union government data shows that TN is the safest state for women, yet opposition parties slander DMK government," she stated, defending the administration's record on women's safety.
Annadurai Death Anniversary Commemoration
In a related development, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced that the DMK will organize a silent march on February 3 to mark the death anniversary of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai. The procession will proceed from Anna Salai, where Annadurai's statue is located, to his memorial on Kamaraj Salai. Senior DMK leaders, MLAs, and MPs are expected to participate in this solemn event, honoring the party's founding figure.
This comprehensive campaign launch and historical reflection underscore the DMK's strategic positioning ahead of upcoming political engagements, emphasizing alliance stability and governance achievements while challenging opposition narratives.
