Gaya: Police have lodged an FIR against seven named persons and 20 unidentified individuals in connection with the alleged attack on the convoy of Jyoti Devi, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) MLA from Barachatti, which took place on Sunday afternoon. No arrests have been made so far in the case.
Union Minister Criticizes Police Response
Union MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who is the MLA's 'samadhi' (father-in-law), accused the local police of negligence in handling the case. He warned that he would gherao (lay siege to) the residences of the Gaya district magistrate and senior superintendent of police if the accused were not arrested within seven days.
Details of the Incident
According to the complaint filed by the MLA, she was traveling to attend a social function at Gambhira village under Mohanpur police station area when the incident took place on a narrow road. The altercation reportedly stemmed from an issue related to giving right of way to her vehicle.
The complaint stated that when her security personnel requested the occupants of another vehicle to reverse and allow passage, the passengers allegedly became aggressive. Around 20 people reportedly surrounded the MLA's vehicle and attempted to smash its window panes.
Allegations of Casteist Remarks
The accused also allegedly manhandled her security personnel, identified as Dheeraj Kumar and Suraj Kumar, and made casteist remarks in the MLA's presence, according to the FIR. The incident has raised concerns about law and order in the region, with political leaders demanding swift action against the perpetrators.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and other applicable laws. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the unidentified accused.
