Former Karnataka minister and senior Congress leader C. Veeranna died at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Thursday. He was 86. Veeranna had been suffering from age-related ailments and was admitted to the hospital last week, family sources confirmed.
Political Journey
Veeranna began his political career as a member of the Madhugiri taluk board and later served as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1990 to 1996. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Madhugiri constituency in 1999 and served as a minister in the S.M. Krishna cabinet from 1999 to 2004, handling portfolios including Sericulture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries. He also served as the Chairman of the Karnataka Sericulture Development Corporation and the Karnataka State Handloom Development Corporation.
Contributions and Legacy
Known for his focus on rural development and sericulture, Veeranna was instrumental in implementing several schemes to boost silk farming in the state. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Sericulture University in Madhugiri. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed grief over his demise, stating, "Veeranna's contributions to the state's sericulture sector and his dedication to public service will always be remembered." Former chief minister Siddaramaiah also paid tribute, calling him a "grassroots leader who worked tirelessly for the welfare of farmers."
Condolences Pour In
Several political leaders across party lines mourned Veeranna's death. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a tweet, "Deeply saddened by the passing of my long-time colleague C. Veeranna. He was a true servant of the people." Veeranna is survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter. His funeral will be held with full state honours at his native village in Madhugiri on Friday. Hundreds of supporters and party workers are expected to attend the last rites.
