India on Tuesday urged Bangladesh to take action against extremist elements and ensure the safety of religious minorities following reports that an image of Lord Ram was desecrated during demonstrations by Islamist groups. The incident triggered widespread protests by the Hindu community across the neighbouring country.
Desecration Incident Sparks Outrage
The controversy began when an image of the Hindu deity was allegedly desecrated during protests by Islamist groups opposing the construction of a proposed 81-foot statue of Lord Ram in Gaibandha district, northern Bangladesh. The incident has led to torchlight marches and demonstrations in Dhaka, with Hindu organisations demanding accountability and stronger protections for religious minorities.
India's Official Response
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue, stating, "Regarding the reports from Bangladesh about acts of desecration involving images of Hindu deities — which have sparked protests — we expect the Bangladeshi government to curb extremist elements and guarantee the safety of the minority community residing there."
Protests Gather Momentum
Over the past several days, student groups and Hindu community members have taken to the streets, condemning what they describe as an attack on religious sentiments. Demonstrators have also called for the resumption of work on the proposed Ram statue project, which has reportedly been halted due to security concerns and pressure from radical groups.
Recurring Concerns for Minorities
The incident has again highlighted the condition of religious minorities in Bangladesh, which has experienced periodic communal violence and attacks on places of worship. India has repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly during episodes of unrest and political instability.
Bilateral Relations Under Strain
Despite otherwise close ties between India and Bangladesh — encompassing cooperation in trade, connectivity, security, and energy — incidents targeting minorities have often cast a shadow over bilateral relations. The latest remarks from New Delhi underscore ongoing calls in India for stronger safeguards for vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.
