IUML Nominates Shereena Shukoor for Thrikkakara Vice-Chairperson Post
IUML Picks Shereena Shukoor for Thrikkakara Vice-Chair

In a significant political move ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has officially put forward Shereena Shukoor as its candidate for the position of vice-chairperson in the Thrikkakara municipality. This development comes as the United Democratic Front (UDF), of which IUML is a key partner, enjoys a clear majority but remains locked in discussions over the top post.

IUML Stakes Its Claim in New Council

The announcement was made by IUML leader and former municipal chairperson P M Younnus. He confirmed the party's decision to nominate Shukoor, a seasoned figure in local administration. Younnus also indicated that the League would seek a standing committee chairmanship, although a final decision on that front will be taken only after the new councillors are sworn in.

Shereena Shukoor is no newcomer to the municipal arena. She brings prior experience, having served as the vice-chairperson during the 2010–2015 council term, representing the Vazhakkala East ward. In the recent elections, she secured her seat from ward 39, Mythripuram.

UDF's Chairperson Conundrum Despite Majority

Despite the UDF's commanding victory, winning 28 out of the 48 seats in the municipality, a consensus on who will assume the chairperson's role has not been reached. Internal negotiations within the front are still ongoing, highlighting the complex dynamics of coalition politics.

Congress parliamentary party leader Habib Parappaden confirmed that the front has not yet made a final call. He revealed that a meeting of the party leadership is scheduled for the coming week, where a decision is anticipated. Prominent names being considered for the chairperson post include Congress councillors Rashid Ullampillil and Shaji Vazhakkala, according to insider sources.

What Happens Next?

The immediate next step is the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected municipal councillors, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday. This ceremony will formally inaugurate the new council, setting the stage for the subsequent election of the chairperson and vice-chairperson.

The delay in deciding the chairperson underscores the intricate process of post-poll alliance management, even with a comfortable majority. All eyes are now on the UDF's internal meeting next week, which is expected to resolve the leadership question and chart the course for Thrikkakara's municipal governance.
