Karnataka Government Calls Special Legislative Session on MGNREGA Changes
Karnataka's legislative council chief whip Saleem Ahmad has announced a special legislative session. This session will run for one week starting January 22. The primary agenda focuses on discussing recent changes to the MGNREGA scheme.
Urgent Call for Opposition Participation
Saleem Ahmad addressed a press conference in Haveri on Sunday. He made a direct appeal to opposition parties. He urged them to actively participate in the upcoming session. Ahmad emphasized the need for meaningful discussions without wasting the Assembly's valuable time.
"Let's sit together, both the ruling and opposition parties, and discuss the people's problems," Ahmad stated firmly. He stressed that cooperation is essential, particularly regarding the MGNREGA issue. He believes there is no room for political games on this matter.
Controversy Over MGNREGA Name Change
The central government recently changed the name of the MGNREGA scheme. This decision has sparked significant controversy. Saleem Ahmad expressed strong disapproval of this move.
"MGNREGA was a good scheme, and the central government suddenly made significant changes to the scheme's name. It is unfortunate," he remarked. Ahmad connected the name change to broader political principles. He alleged that the BJP has lost faith in Mahatma Gandhi's legacy.
In a pointed criticism, Ahmad said, "Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi, but the BJP assassinated his principles." He questioned the moral standing of those who might protest in front of Gandhi's statue now.
Congress Launches Nationwide Protest Movement
The Congress party has initiated a massive movement across the country regarding MGNREGA. In Karnataka, the party started the "MGNREGA Bachao" campaign from January 10.
This campaign involves protests at multiple administrative levels:
- Gram panchayat level
- Taluk panchayat level
- District level
The protests demand the withdrawal of the changes made to the scheme. Saleem Ahmad explained that MGNREGA was originally implemented to benefit the rural population. Through this struggle, the Congress aims to inform people about the implications of the changes.
Warning to the Central Government
Saleem Ahmad issued a stern warning regarding the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name from the scheme. "The people of the country will not forgive you for removing Mahatma Gandhi's name; they will teach you a lesson," he declared.
He emphasized that everyone should participate in the Assembly and respond effectively to people's issues. The special session represents a critical opportunity for constructive dialogue on this important rural employment program.
