Kerala Election Storm: UDF Candidate Alleges 2018 Floods Were 'Man-Made' Disaster
Kerala Election: UDF Alleges 2018 Floods Were Man-Made

Kerala Election Campaign Concludes with Explosive Flood Allegations

In a dramatic escalation on the final day of public campaigning, United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate from Muvattupuzha, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, launched a fierce attack against the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Kuzhalnadan ignited a major political controversy by asserting that the catastrophic 2018 Kerala floods were not merely a natural calamity but a 'man-made' disaster resulting from systemic corruption and gross mismanagement.

Audio Clip Alleges Deliberate Dam Mismanagement

On Tuesday, Kuzhalnadan presented what he claimed to be a damning audio recording. The clip purportedly features the voice of the current Electricity Minister, K Krishnankutty. In the recording, the speaker makes serious allegations against the then Water Resources Minister, Mathew T Thomas. The claims suggest that Thomas intentionally mismanaged dam levels and spillway operations to provide illicit benefits to private contractors and the influential mineral sand lobby.

The specific accusations detailed in the audio include:

  • A deliberate delay in opening the Thottappally spillway shutters to prevent valuable sand deposits from being washed away.
  • Similar acts of mismanagement at the Maniyar project and the Peringalkuthu dam.

"It was the greed among those in the Pinarayi government that brought Kerala to the state of devastation," Kuzhalnadan declared to reporters. He was accompanied by Prabhat, identified as a former staffer of Minister Krishnankutty. Kuzhalnadan stated the recording captured a private phone conversation between Krishnankutty and a senior member of his own party.

Minister Denies Allegations, Points to AI Deepfake

Minister K Krishnankutty swiftly and categorically denied all allegations. He dismissed the audio clip as a fabrication, vehemently denying that the voice was his. Krishnankutty suggested the recording might be an AI-generated deepfake, a sophisticated digital forgery created to manipulate public opinion.

"This is a politically motivated move to tarnish Thomas's reputation before the elections," the minister asserted. He announced plans to pursue legal action and demanded a thorough, scientific audit of the audio file to expose what he termed a 'malicious forgery' designed to sway the upcoming election results.

Krishnankutty also raised pointed questions about Kuzhalnadan's timing. He challenged why the UDF candidate had never raised these grave concerns in the state assembly if he genuinely believed the floods were man-made. The minister highlighted that expert bodies, including IIT Madras, had already investigated the 2018 disaster.

Furthermore, Krishnankutty attacked the credibility of Prabhat, the individual presented as a witness. He stated that Prabhat was never an official staff member but rather a disgruntled person who left the party after being denied undue favours.

LDF Candidate Rejects Claims, Cites Expert Reports

Meanwhile, Mathew T Thomas, the LDF candidate from Thiruvalla and the former minister at the center of the allegations, labeled the accusations as entirely baseless. He firmly asserted that there was no delay whatsoever in opening the Thottappally spillway shutters during the 2018 crisis.

Thomas pointed to the official findings of reputable institutions to counter the claims. He referenced reports from IIT Madras and the Central Water Commission, which concluded that the unprecedented devastation was primarily the result of extreme and record-breaking rainfall, not any failure in dam management or spillway operation.

This explosive exchange has thrown the final stages of the Kerala election campaign into turmoil, setting the stage for a heated political and legal battle over the causes of one of the state's worst natural disasters.
