A 34-year-old man from Kerala, identified as Manu, was detained by Goa police at a party venue in Calangute on Sunday. He was later handed over to Kerala police for investigation into a theft case. The accused allegedly committed the crime in Kerala and then traveled to Goa to party and visit casinos.
Details of the Incident
According to PI Dattaguru Sawant of the crime branch, a case was registered on May 27 at the Bekal police station in Kasargode district, Kerala, against the habitual offender. The accused selected gold items, including rings and a necklace, at a shop. He then presented a fraudulent online payment confirmation to the shop owner before fleeing with the gold articles, thereby committing criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Intelligence and Search Operations
Based on intelligence from Kerala police indicating that the suspect, known for a similar modus operandi, often seeks leisure in Goa following such offenses, a team was constituted along with Calangute police station. Searches were conducted across various locations in Panaji and Calangute. Intelligence suggested the accused’s habit of frequenting casinos or party events upon commission of crime. Consequently, police alerted the management of casinos and party clubs.
Apprehension and Recovery
Following an extensive search, on May 30, information was received that Manu would be present at a party venue in Calangute. After confirming his identity, he was successfully apprehended. Kerala police officers, who were present in Goa, recovered the stolen gold articles from him and then took him to Kerala.
The swift action by Goa police in coordination with Kerala police led to the successful detention and recovery of stolen property. The accused is now in the custody of Kerala police for further investigation.
