Madurai: Autorickshaw drivers affiliated to the KTK Thangamani Memorial Unorganised Workers Union and the Annai Aravindar auto stand near Aravind Eye Hospital staged a road blockade at Kuruvikkaran Salai on Thursday to press for various demands. The demands included a ban on private mini-buses, reduction in petrol and diesel prices, provision of fuel at subsidised rates for auto workers, and an end to the gas shortage.
Protest Leadership
The protest was led by AITUC Madurai district president M Nanda Singh, union president V Gurusamy, and other union leaders. A large number of auto workers participated in the demonstration.
Police Intervention
Police officials held talks with the protestors and assured them that steps would be taken to regulate private buses. They promised to hold a meeting within a week to address the issue. Following the assurance, the agitation was called off.
