Nitish Kumar's New Bihar Govt: Magadh Division Ministerial Race Heats Up
Magadh Division Ministerial Race in New Bihar Govt

Political Speculation Swirls Around Magadh Division's Representation in New Bihar Government

As the National Democratic Alliance prepares to form the new government in Bihar under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, intense speculation has begun regarding which political faces from the crucial Magadh division will secure ministerial positions. The guessing game focuses on the distribution of power among the alliance partners from this significant region.

NDA's Stronghold in Magadh Division

The Magadh division, comprising five districts, has emerged as a stronghold for the NDA, with 20 out of 26 MLAs belonging to the ruling coalition. This numerical strength naturally narrows the choice for ministerial positions to these twenty elected representatives, though Members of the Legislative Council are also eligible for consideration.

From the MLC basket, the inclusion of Santosh Suman is considered almost certain. As the son and political heir of former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and given his previous experience in the outgoing cabinet, his ministerial appointment appears guaranteed. However, this likely appointment closes the door for other HAM(S) party members, including Deepa Manjhi, who is Santosh Suman's wife, since the party is expected to receive only one ministerial position.

Key Contenders and Political Calculations

Following conventional political wisdom, Gaya town MLA Prem Kumar is expected to receive a significant position in the new administration. Political observers suggest that even if he is appointed as the Speaker of the assembly, he would still be regarded as Magadh division's representative in the new power structure.

If both Prem Kumar and Santosh Suman secure important positions, the ministerial quota for BJP and HAM(S) from Magadh would be considered fulfilled. According to prevailing political calculations, there will be approximately one minister for every six NDA MLAs, which translates to three or possibly four ministerial positions for the Magadh division.

The remaining one or two ministers are likely to come from either JD(U) or LJP(RV). The JD(U) has six MLAs compared to LJP(RV)'s four in the division. The performance of LJP(RV) in Magadh division has been relatively weaker compared to other alliance partners, as the party lost both Bodh Gaya and Makhdumpur (Jehanabad) seats to RJD candidates.

Women Representation and Caste Dynamics

Among the JD(U) winners, Manorma Devi and Vibha Devi, both women belonging to the Yadav community, are being considered strong contenders. Given Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's focus on women-centric politics, their appointment would not surprise political observers.

With two almost certain ministerial faces hailing from Gaya district, the third or fourth position might go to representatives from the remaining four districts of the division, improving Vibha Devi's chances. Her supporters argue that if Leisi Singh can be made a minister, why not Vibha, despite the controversial background of her husband Rajballabh Yadav.

Another potential candidate is Binita Mehta, the first-time woman MLA from Govindpur. Although new to electoral politics, she cannot be ruled out given that her husband serves as the Nawada district chief of the BJP. NDA insiders point out that Binita simultaneously fulfills four quotas: Magadh division representative, woman, LJP(RV), and BJP, making her a strategically valuable choice for the ministerial position.

The final composition of ministers from Magadh division will reflect the complex interplay of regional representation, caste equations, gender balance, and coalition dynamics that characterize Bihar's political landscape.
