Voting for Maharashtra's municipal corporation elections is currently in progress across 29 civic bodies. This marks the first local body elections in the state since 2017. Polling began at 7:30 AM on Thursday under tight security arrangements.

Voting Schedule and Arrangements

Polling will continue until 5:30 PM today. The Maharashtra government has declared a holiday for all offices in municipal corporation areas to facilitate voting. Special arrangements including wheelchair access and ramps have been made available for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities at all polling centers.

Voters formed long queues at various polling booths across the state since morning. Stock markets including BSE and NSE remain closed today for the elections, with trading resuming tomorrow.

Vote Counting Details

The State Election Commission has scheduled vote counting for January 16. Counting will occur in a phased manner across 23 different locations throughout cities and suburbs. The process begins at 10 AM on Friday.

Approximately 64,000 civic workers have been deployed for vote counting duties. This represents a significant increase of 30.6 percent from the 2017 elections. In the BMC alone, 1,729 candidates are contesting for 227 seats. More than 20 Returning Officers have been assigned across BMC polls, with two constituencies being counted simultaneously to cover all 227 wards.

Election Scale and Infrastructure

These elections cover 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards of 29 civic bodies in Maharashtra. Over 3 crore 48 lakh voters will cast their votes today. Election authorities have arranged around 44,000 control units and nearly 88,000 ballot units for the voting process.

Nearly 2 lakh officers and employees have been deployed on election duty to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.

As of 11:30 AM on Thursday, preliminary voter turnout figures show:

  • BMC recorded 17.73 percent voter turnout
  • Navi Mumbai recorded 19.68 percent turnout
  • Vasai Virar recorded 19.34 percent turnout
  • KDMC recorded 17.53 percent turnout
  • Thane recorded 19 percent turnout
  • PCMC elections showed 16.3 percent turnout
  • PMC polls recorded 14.92 percent turnout

The State Election Commission will announce final results for all Municipal Corporation elections across Maharashtra on January 16 following the completion of vote counting.
