Mahout Seriously Injured as Captive Elephant Turns Violent at Kerala Temple Festival

A mahout sustained serious injuries after a captive elephant turned violent during a temple festival in Alappuzha, Kerala, on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at the Aarattu festival of the Thirumanimangalam Mahadevar Temple located in Kudassanad, Charummoodu.

Chaos Erupts During Ceremonial Procession

Four elephants were participating in the traditional Aarattu procession as part of the religious ceremonies. During the event, one of the elephants suddenly became aggressive and threw its mahout to the ground. The violent outburst caused significant chaos as people ran away to escape potential harm.

Vehicles on the temple premises were also damaged during the incident, adding to the disruption. The mahout was immediately provided with medical attention and was first taken to a hospital in Adoor for initial treatment.

Medical Response and Festival Continuation

Due to the severity of his injuries, the mahout was later transferred to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital for further care and specialized treatment. Despite the alarming event, the temple ceremonies continued without the elephants by 9 pm, as organizers adapted to ensure the festival could proceed safely.

Authorities managed to bring the situation under control by tranquillizing the aggressive elephant after the attack. This measure was taken to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety in the area.

The incident highlights the risks associated with using captive elephants in public events, especially during crowded festivals. It has sparked discussions on safety protocols and animal handling practices in such cultural settings in Kerala.
