Akot Phile Police have made a significant arrest in a politically charged attack case. They have taken into custody the main accused involved in the assault on BJP corporator-elect Sharad Turkar. This incident occurred shortly after the announcement of the Akola Municipal Corporation election results.
Background of the Attack
The police investigation reveals a story of political rivalry and personal grievance. Nitin Raut, who contested from the same party panel as Turkar, faced defeat in the elections. Authorities state that Raut harbored a deep-seated grudge over this loss. He allegedly masterminded the violent attack on Turkar as a result.
Details of the Assault
According to police reports, Raut lured Turkar to a location near his office. There, he gathered anti-social elements to carry out the plan. The attackers used a large stone to strike Turkar on the head, inflicting serious injuries. When Turkar's brother, Bharat, tried to intervene, he too was assaulted and threatened by the group.
Evasion and Arrest
Following the attack, the accused fled the scene. Police say Raut employed tactics to avoid capture, including frequently changing his locations and mobile SIM cards. Based on a formal complaint, Akot Phile Police registered a case and launched a manhunt. Their efforts led to the arrest of Raut and a co-accused, identified as Sheikh Sohel Sheikh Chand, aged 24.
The arrest marks a crucial step in addressing post-election violence in the region. Police continue their investigation into the full extent of the incident.
