Chennai: In a visible sign of tension within the DMK-led alliance, MDMK legislators T M Rajendran and R Senthil Selvan, elected from Kadayanallur and Sirkazhi on DMK’s ‘rising sun’ symbol, have been moved to separate seats in the TN assembly, away from DMK members where they previously sat.
The reassignment took effect on Thursday, the first day of the session following the TVK government winning the no-confidence motion. The two MLAs have been relocated alongside other former DMK allies, who also contested on the ‘rising sun’ symbol, including MMK’s M H Jawahirullah, KMDK’s K Nithyanandan, and MJK’s M Thamimun Ansari.
“We were looking for our seats and realised we had been placed elsewhere,” Rajendran told TOI. He now occupies a front-row seat on the opposition benches, with Senthil Selvan seated directly behind him. Ministers N Anand and K A Sengottaiyan acknowledged the MDMK MLAs with greetings inside the House.
The move comes amid MDMK’s recent overtures towards rival TVK. DMK sources indicated that no discussions had taken place on allowing MDMK legislators to address the House during the session. “There was talk of permitting other allies, including Jawahirullah, to speak. But there were no talks on MDMK MLAs participation,” a senior DMK leader said, adding that allies who contested on the ‘rising sun’ symbol had been issued DMK identity cards ahead of the election and are formally regarded as party members.
The MDMK general council is set to convene on June 27 to discuss whether the party will continue in the DMK alliance.
