The sole Congress legislator in Mizoram, C Ngunlianchunga, has issued a strong condemnation following the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura, who was fatally attacked in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The MLA described the incident as a horrific hate crime and called for swift justice.
MLA's Stern Condemnation and Call for Action
Terming the event "deeply disturbing," Ngunlianchunga stated that violence targeting students and minority communities has no place in a civilized society. He represents the Aizawl constituency in the Mizoram assembly.
"I strongly condemn this heinous crime and urge the authorities concerned to conduct a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation," the MLA asserted. He demanded the strictest punishment for the perpetrators and immediate steps to ensure the safety of students from India's northeastern regions studying across the country.
Extending his condolences, Ngunlianchunga added, "My heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved family. We stand in solidarity with them and demand justice for Anjel Chakma." The victim was a resident of Nandannagar in West Tripura district.
All India Chakma Students' Union Alleges Lapses, Demands CBI Probe
The All India Chakma Students' Union (AICSU) has submitted a series of serious allegations and demands to the Uttarakhand government. The union has called for the investigation to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and for the trial to be moved outside Uttarakhand, preferably to Delhi.
In a detailed statement, the AICSU highlighted multiple alleged failures by the Uttarakhand Police. They claim there was a three-day delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) even though the attack occurred on December 9. The union accused the Selakui Police Station of initially refusing to register the complaint and failing to apply the appropriate legal sections.
Furthermore, the student body alleged that senior police officials tried to downplay the serious incident by framing it as a mere "fight," while ignoring accusations of racial abuse made during the attack.
Concerns Over Hospital Negligence and Witness Safety
The AICSU also raised alarming questions about the conduct of the hospital where the victim was treated. They stated that Anjel Chakma was admitted in critical condition to Graphic Era Hospital, but the police were not informed immediately. This delay, according to the union, raises significant issues regarding transparency and accountability in the initial handling of the case.
Citing severe safety concerns, the union expressed that the victim's family members and crucial eyewitnesses do not feel secure in Uttarakhand. This lack of security is a primary reason for their demand to shift the trial to ensure a fair and unbiased judicial process.
The comprehensive list of demands from the AICSU includes:
- A CBI inquiry into the conduct of the police and the alleged hospital negligence.
- Immediate disciplinary action against the officials responsible for the lapses.
- Arrest of all accused who are still absconding.
- Financial compensation of Rs 2 crore for the victim's grieving family.
- Establishment of a dedicated special police cell in Uttarakhand to protect students and residents from the northeastern states.
The AICSU has vowed to pursue the matter through all available legal and constitutional avenues until justice is served for Anjel Chakma.
