MLC Presses for Jal Jeevan Mission Deadline and New Waste Plant
MLC Kishore Kumar Puttur has made a strong call for action. He wants the Jal Jeevan Mission projects in Dakshina Kannada district finished on time. He also demanded a new material recovery facility in Amara Mudnoor, located in Sullia taluk.
Urgent Review of Drinking Water Scheme
Kishore Kumar Puttur spoke directly to the secretary of the panchayat raj department, Randeep D. He urged an immediate review of the situation. The MLC stressed the need to complete the remaining Jal Jeevan Mission work with quality and within the set timeframe.
Recent data from the legislature session in Belagavi provides details. The central government's Jal Jeevan Mission aims to give clean drinking water to every rural home. In Dakshina Kannada district, work began in 230 gram panchayats. However, work is still ongoing in 42 of these GPs.
The situation is similar in neighboring Udupi district. Work started in 155 gram panchayats there. Yet, progress continues in 39 GPs. The MLC pointed out a critical issue. The scheme launched about five years ago. Its slow pace in many areas delays full benefits for thousands of rural households across both districts.
Pressing Need for New Waste Management Facility
The MLC also highlighted a growing waste management problem. Dry waste from 68 gram panchayats in Puttur, Sullia, and Kadaba taluks of DK district goes to a single unit. This solid waste management centre is in Kedambadi, Puttur taluk.
This unit has a major limitation. Its capacity is only seven tons. This amount is insufficient for the current volume of collected dry waste. Kishore Kumar Puttur brought this capacity issue to the department secretary's attention.
He proposed a concrete solution. The construction of a new material recovery facility with a 10-ton capacity under the K-Shore Project in Amara Mudnoor. A detailed project report is already ready. It estimates the cost at Rs 5.9 crore. The MLC urged swift action to build this new MRF based on the existing report for public benefit.
Call for Scientific Disposal of Bio-Medical Waste
Kishore Kumar Puttur raised another environmental concern. He emphasized the district's need for an incinerator machine unit. This equipment is necessary for the scientific disposal of bio and medical waste. He brought this specific requirement to the notice of Secretary Randeep.
The officer provided a response. He assured the MLC that funding for appropriate units would be considered. The secretary also promised that necessary actions would be taken to address this need.
The MLC's interventions cover critical public infrastructure areas. They focus on ensuring timely access to clean water and improving waste management systems in the region.
