A violent mob targeted the residence of a former legislator in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district on Saturday night, causing significant damage and prompting a high-level police investigation. The incident is suspected to be a fallout of a political dispute earlier in the day.
The Night of Violence
According to police reports, more than 30 individuals descended upon the bungalow of former Amalner MLA and Shiv Sena politician Shirish Chaudhary in Nandurbar city around 10:30 PM on Saturday. The assailants pelted stones at the property, shattering window panes and damaging vehicles parked outside.
The attack escalated with an attempt to set one of the vehicles on fire. After wreaking havoc, the mob fled the scene. Upon receiving information, police teams rushed to the spot and immediately heightened security in the area to prevent further unrest.
Police Action and Political Link
Acting on a complaint filed by Shirish Chaudhary, the Nandurbar city police have registered a formal case. The charges invoked are serious, including sections for dacoity, criminal trespass, and mischief under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside relevant sections of the Indian Arms Act.
Senior police officers confirmed they are actively tracing the individuals involved. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Mahajan provided crucial context, linking the night attack to events earlier on Saturday. Prathamesh Chaudhary, the former MLA's son, was elected as the Vice-President of the Nandurbar Municipal Council that day.
"An argument broke out between some people during Prathamesh's celebration rally on Saturday afternoon. Though the matter seemed resolved after a while, we suspect the Saturday night attack on the former MLA's house is a fallout of the same," Mahajan stated. He affirmed that the case is under investigation.
Dual FIRs and Ongoing Probe
In a related development, the police had also registered a separate suo motu FIR (First Information Report) concerning the afternoon altercation. This case, filed under the BNS section for committing affray, names 29 people, including both Shirish Chaudhary and his son Prathamesh, among others.
The twin cases have put the spotlight on political tensions in the region. Authorities are now working to identify and apprehend the members of the large mob responsible for the brazen attack on the former lawmaker's home, while also probing the sequence of events that led from a celebratory rally to a violent night.
